Although I cannot share a group photo now. I am pleased to introduce the new round of STEMarts Lab apprentices for the year 2023. In February we hosted a Workshop for the community youth to participate in multiple presentations from various speakers who opened their eyes to things they did not know existed. We were also able to show them what we learned with an app called Multibrush. It was great to see all the kids excited about drawing in a 3D space as well as see them invested in our wellbeing in space.
Stick with the blog posts to see how tis year unfolds with the bright minds of tomorrow.

It was incredible to see the months of work that I had been a part of come together into something tangibly beautiful. To be able to set up the screens for the projectors that displayed the space messengers bored with other team members that had been working on this project was unreal. From multiple Virtual Reality training and workshops to the presentation day, everything was starting to come together, and everyone was delighted to be part of the fun.
One of my best memories prior to PASEO was when we got to put together the tardigrade workshop for kids to learn in diverse ways about them, so you could imagine how amazing it was to see a large marshmallow like tardigrade floating from a ceiling in the Imagine Children's Museum. I wish good for the next PASEO festival in hopes of an even more grand two days. Nothing will compare to this experience, and I am grateful to leave my mark on the Space Messengers world. Our most recent project as a team was learning how to put together and teach a workshop to diverse groups of students. Svetlana Backhaus, a fellow apprenticeship member, and Amy Pilling, a tardigrade expert produced the idea for a workshop targeted towards informing students on the perplexing microorganisms.
As you can see from the photos, we worked together to brainstorm ideas and put together different stations for the kids to earn about tardigrades. In the first image we set up a comfortable video nook for students to watch an overview of what they would be learning about throughout the day. Next there was an entire table set up with microscopes that provided a closer look to what the tardigrades looked like in real time. One of my personal favorite stations was the 3D model room. There were tons and tons of supplies from clay and sculpting tools as well as other materials that the kids used to create their very own superhero tardigrade. Lastly, we set up a drawing table for the students to create works of art we were all proud of. I was deeply impacted by the idea of being a part of instructing the growing students and potentially sparking a lifelong interest of adventure, art, and education. My next experience with the team included us packing up in a bus and heading to the Q station in Albuquerque New Mexico, and the Very Large Array in Socorro New, Mexico. I learned about what each of my team members specialized and were interested in. Knowing that everyone was interested in different areas of art, science, and math and can come together to teach ourselves and youth is amazing.
Continuing with the fieldtrip, at the VLA we took a private tour around the old lakebed containing 27 huge dishes that worked together to create one breathtaking telescope. Looking back, it seems like an accurate representation of our group, we are our own individual people but come together to function as one impacting experience. It was an experience I will remember for the rest of my days. As the first time meeting my teammates, I could not ask for a better way to learn from my peers and important scientists that have so much to offer. I had a blast learning about things I would not typically learn about as an artist and author. I can say from personal experience that Agnes and the STEM apprentices ensure that everyone understands the information being taught in their own special way.

AuthorAs Agnes Chavez's Director's Assistant I work to help the behind the scenes work run as smoothly as possible. I also train other new team members on the information I have gained during this wonderful experience. |
